Its fair to say that the E30 M3 was the launch pad for the success of the BMW M division we know today. Made as a homologation special to qualify for the DTM and other touring car championships, the original version of the M3 slayed all comers on the track. It also proved hugely popular amongst demanding amateur drivers, providing an almost unreasonable level of capability on the public roads. And today, it still feels as fresh as it did over 30 years ago. Whilst 0-60 speeds may not quite stack up to todays point-and-shoot turbo powered machines, the appeal of the E30 M3 runs much deeper, and has much more lasting appeal for the serious driver.
And then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, there’s the rag top version. Its difficult to think of a coupe design that lends itself so brilliantly to having its roof chopped off. The flat bed of the convertible accentuates the flared arches, skirts and spoilers, adding a dose of added menace and road presence to an already sporty looking car. It’s dated incredibly well as a design, and if turning heads is what you enjoy, there’s little in the way of modern classics to beat an E30 M3 cabriolet. The best part is the rarity of these sublime machines. Only 781 convertible M3s were manufactured between 1990-1993 and with the usual number being lost to careless driving, theft, or falling into the wrong hands, there may only be as few as 350 left that you’d want to own.
And this particular M3 convertible is one you’ll definitely want to own. Sitting pretty in Macau blue (possibly the best colour?) and striking ivory leather with ///M striped seats, WTF (its number plate) has been owned by the same husband and wife enthusiasts for 25 years. During this time they have loved and cared for this car, and we’ve seen it regularly over those years, despite the distance between ML and the car’s home. The mileage – 113,895 – is well below average for the car’s age, and belies the super condition. Our technical team – all E30 M3 fans to a man – have thoroughly inspected the car prior to it coming into the showroom, and the results show just how nicely the owners have looked after their M3 over the years. We love this car, and if you’re looking for an unmolested, cared-for, driveable E30 M3 convertible, then this is the car for you.
