BMW E30 M3 Convertible – project with excellent provenance
The E30 M3 is truly a Legend. Winning its way into hearts and minds during the mid to late 80s, it was the classic example of the ‘race on a Sunday, sell on a Monday’ doctrine that powered the surge in interest of performance cars with race pedigree during this golden age.
Out of the just under 18,000 examples of the E30 M3s produced during its run, only 786 were convertibles, with even fewer – 486 in total – produced with the later ‘evo’ configured engine, producing 215 bhp.
With its flat deck making the E30 perfect for convertible configuration, those flared arches and muscular stance, the E30 M3 convertible is ageing beautifully, and has become one of the most sought-after and attractive performance convertible of that classic decade – BMW’s indisputable ‘purple-patch’.
This particular car has provenance to die for, having been acquired by the owner and his brother as a joint project, way back in the late 90s from Germany, and they brought the car straight to Munich Legends for assessment. Over the years we’ve kept tabs on the car, and we’ve recently carried out an inspection service, bringing the servicing and MOT up to date.
To give you an idea of the details included in the paperwork, we have the original advert from a German classified paper, giving the price in DM and even records of the trip to Germany to buy the car (included expenses details!)
Condition-wise, the car does need some tlc, with a few minor areas of rust becoming visible around the arches and wings. The paint is to some extent showing its age, but in general this example is fully road worthy – it certainly drives really well, having just passed a brand new MOT – mechanically good and is perfectly ownable and useable just as it is.
