Superb E38 750iL V12 – super spec
The E38 incarnation of the 7 series is considered by many to be the pinnacle of BMW’s hugely successful top-of-the-range monster (over 340,000 sold world-wide). Powered by a magnificent 5.4 litre V12 engine, the E38 had the looks, the power, the build quality, and in this special case, the luxury. Of the 340,000+ E38s sold, only 7331 came with this spec and configuration – mostly sold to clients for whom only the very best would do (and Geoffrey Archer).
Known to Munich legends for most of its life, this particular car lived locally to us at the near-by manor house. The driver of the estate would bring the car in regularly for all its servicing and repairs, without regard for cost, and we got to know the car well as a result. The vehicle was then passed on to an associate of the estate, who has owned the car ever since.
Of course, if you’re going to own an E38 750iL (long wheel base), spec is all-important – and this car definitely has what it takes. Euphemistically referred to on the spec sheet as ‘rear compartment equipment’, the spec is, quite literally, fit for an Arab prince. Electrically adjustable heated comfort rear seats, rear (2nd) telephone and hifi controls, picnic tables, fridge (working!), inlayed wood trim including grab handles, vanity lights and mirrors in driver’s headrests, rear blinds and double glazing, in addition to the driver aids and enhancements of EDC, Xenons, DSC, self levelling suspension and so on. It is also in what is considered to be the most desirable colour combination – Aegean Blue Metallic (336) with biscuit leather – by many enthusiasts.
This is a great opportunity to own a low-mileage, super-spec, well maintained, very up-and-together, classic top of the range BMW V12 ‘Mercedes killer’ from the company’s indisputably greatest period.
