What do you call a car with an F1 derived V10 engine, over 500 bhp, a sequential gearbox and enough load space for a pack of dogs? An E61 M5 touring, of course. BMW have tantalisingly only ever made two versions of the M5 in the touring (estate-car/shooting break) format – the E34 and the E60 – both of which are absolutely cult cars. The M5 touring brings family size practicality to a blue-blooded road-racer, with a banshee-like howl and handling that will out-corner most other cars on the road. You can see why they have achieved ‘Legend’ status.
With the E34, owners had to sacrifice comfort and convenience by having the steering wheel on the wrong side. Luckily for UK drivers, with the E61 M5 touring, BMW did decide to make a right-hand drive version. The only downside is that they limited production to a paltry 222 cars. So, with rarity just adding more fuel to the cult-status fire, the E61 M5 has to be the perfect combination of a practical car, with near-guaranteed investment appeal, and the performance to set your pants on fire. Well spec’d, easy to drive – once mastered, the M5 is an incredibly rewarding machine – and comfy, the M5 touring is most certainly a car you need to own.
This particular machine is very well known to us, as we’ve stored it for the current owner since we sold it to him 6 years ago. Posted overseas (Hong Kong), the car came out once or twice per year, was MOT’d and serviced immaculately, driven whilst the owner visited family in the UK and then put away again. It has covered a mere 5500 miles in 6 years. It has also had a BMW warranty for that entire time, and with the previous owners, so has been maintained with a ‘money no issue’ approach. The BMW warranty is still current and will be transferred to the new owner. You can imagine that our workshop inspection produced a top-notch condition report.
