When the M135i first surfaced last year it was impossible to avoid comparisons with the muscle-bound 1M – basically an M3 in disguise. You might think that “mega-hatch” M135i would compare unfavourably to its genuine Motorsport cousin; but while the stats are slightly down on power compared to the 1M, it does have the advantage of being over 70k lighter, which actually gives it about the same power – weight ratio. The 320bhp, turbo-charged straight-six engine has its familiar howl, and the M135i is phenomenally quick – impressively reaching 60mph in less than 5 seconds. Even with the open diff, as opposed to the limited slip fitted to the 1M, the M135i is extremely driveable. The steering is light and agile, and the M135i sticks to the road on its 18-inch tyres – with the rears widened to 245s for added grip. While BMW won’t call this a true “M” (instead it’s called the – slightly long-winded – “M Sport Automobile” from the M Performance Programme) it certainly feels tight and drives with enviable precision and power – even more so with the Adaptive Suspension (2VF) added on to the spec list of this particular car.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that all this power for the relatively low starting costs of £30k would result in a sparse interior, but yet again the M135i surprises us all. There are plush, black leather sports seats with the sliding arm rest, and everything finished in the Matt Oxide Silver / Fineline Stream Wood trims. Technology-wise the car has all the standard series options, including DAB digital radio, hands-free Bluetooth with USB interface, BMW professional radio, rain sensors, xenons and much more. The owner also chose additional options including the Driver Comfort Package (PDC and cruise control), headlight wash, and the automatic sport ‘box, which makes all the difference to the drive response.
As a virtually new car the M135i is still covered by its 5 year / 50,000 mile BMW service pack, originally supplied tax disc, and 3 years without needing an MOT.
If you’re looking for a car that’s both great fun to drive and impressively practical then this M135i is definitely worth viewing. In gleaming Alpine White with spotless Black Dakota leather interior, this car is everything that you’d expect from a sub-2,500 mile vehicle.
