The BMW Z1 is something different. Those doors that slide down, that shape, that design – the whole driving experience – there’s nothing quite like it. All built in LHD and powered by the superb M20 2.5 litre straight six, most famously from the classic E30 325i – but also in many other BMWs of the era – and made from plastic rather than metal, the first BMW Z car is not just a remarkable design, but a superbly easy classic car to own – it doesn’t rust, and the engines don’t break. And if its admiring looks and plenty of interest you’re after, the Z1 certainly fits the bill. Z stands for zukunft in German, meaning future, and its fair to say that the Z1s avant-guard styling and futuristic looks resemble more a prototype than a production car. But nearly 30 years after it became BMW’s signpost for the future, the Z1 looks as classic and exceptional as it always did.
This particular Z1 has been looked after with great care by its current long-term (doctor) owner – with a fully documented, comprehensive paper history file – something often absent with Z1s. In Primal Green (quirky paint names matching the eccentric styling) this Z1 is a thoroughly driveable, very well maintained and accessible example. The odometer shows 40600 kms, due to a fully recorded clock change at the original reading of 96,612 kms thus a total covered of 85,757 miles. With mid mileage, this particular Z is perfect for an owner who actually wants to drive the car without affecting values, but it will still grace any collection. The panels are in excellent order, with none of the cracking often found around the fixing points – one of the achille’s heels of the Z1 – and the all-round mechanical condition is exactly what you’d expect from a responsible owner.
